The Wayback Machine is a big idea come true: a digital archive of the World Wide Web! It allows us to see what websites looked like in the past. It’s a great tool for anyone interested in the past of the Web and very useful whenever we want to see what a website was like at a certain point in the past. The archive was launched in 2001 and is managed by the non-profit Internet Archive in San Francisco, California, USA.
To use the Wayback Machine, simply enter the URL of a webpage into the site’s search box and click the “BROWSE HISTORY” button! You will then get a list of archived versions of that page that you can view by clicking on each available version.
Additionally, if you create an account on the website, you will be able to use other features, such as saving favorites, for example.
An interesting feature of the Wayback Machine is the “Save a Page” option. This feature allows you to archive a URL and create a permanent link to it. This way, we can have a link to a certain website showing exactly what it was like at a certain time. This works as a kind of “quote” and is more convincing than a simple screenshot, for example. Through this functionality, we can even use the Wayback Machine as legal proof if we need it.
The Wayback Machine stores the historical records of more than 625 billion web pages, making it possible to view the original version of any website and its subsequent updates.
